Montreal c'est toi ma ville

      Als wir Montreal im Sommer 1999 verließen, war das ein Werbe-Jingle, der immer im Radio lief und ich liebte damals die Stadt so sehr, dass ich ihn niemals vergessen habe. / Quand nous avons quitté la ville de Montréal,en été 1999, il y avait ce tinter publicitaire à la radio qui me parlait tellement  que je ne 'ai jamais oublié. /When we left Montreal, in the summer of 1999, there was this jingle about the city on the radio, that I used to hum along since I loved the city so much, so I never forgot it.

     Nach einer nervenaufreibenden Woche des Wohnungssuchens und Hausanschauens habe ich mir das Wochenende frei genommen und bin nach Montreal zu Marie-Helene gefahren. Bisher hatte ich zugegeben nicht den Mut, mit dem Auto in die Stadt zu fahren, aufgrund der zahlreichen Baustellen und dem damit verbundenen Chaos. Aber am Samstag hatte ich einen Besichtigungstermin für ein Mietshaus in der Tasche und war so guten Mutes, dass ich es wagte, mich in die Höhle des Löwen zu begeben. / Après une semaine énervante de recherche de logement et de visites de maisons j'ai pris le week-end (la fin de semaine en patois local) pour aller rendre visite à mon amie Marie-Hélène à Montréal. Je n'avais pas osé de m'y rendre jusque là à cause des chantiers et du chaos qu'ìls créent. Mais samedi, j'ai réussi de fixer un rdv pour visiter une maison à louer et j'étais donc contente et assez confiante pour affronter la bête / After an ennerving week of househunting I took the week-end off to go and see my friend Marie-Helene in Montreal. I haven't dared yet to drive to the city because of the construction sites and the ensuing chaos but I managed to fix an appointment fora rental home and so I was in good spirits and confident enough to face the challenge:

Des Autofahrers größter Feind / Le pire ennemi du conducteur / the car drivers worst enemy

     Zuerst fuhr ich zu MH nach Hause. Auf der Fahrt kam ich an unserem ehemaligen Wohnviertel vorbei, dort wo ich geheiratet hatte und wo Yann die ersten Monate seines Lebens verbrachte. NAch einem Mittagessen nahmen wir die Fahrräder und führen von MH's Wohnung im Osten der Stadt bis zum Stadtzentrum - alles auf Radwegen. Es ist gigantisch, wie toll die Stadt die Infrastruktur für Radfahrer ausgebaut hat. Im Zentrum gingen wir zum Festivalplatz, wo gerade das Festival Presence Autochtone im Gange war und wir schauten uns ein paar Tänze an. / D'abord, je me suis rendue chez MH. En route, j'ai passé notre ancien quartier ou nous sous sommes mariés, et ou Yann a vécu les prmeirs mois de sa vie. Après le déjeuner, nous avons pris les vélos et nous nous sommes rendues au centre ville, de l'appart de MH à l'Est de la ville aux centre - tout sur les pistes cyclables. C'est génial, l'infrastructure que la ville a mis en place pour les cyclistes. Au centre-ville ,on s'est rendu à la Place des festivals ou il y avait une prestation dans le cadre du festival Présence Autochone. / First, I went to MH`s home. On the way I passed my old neighborhood, where we got married and Yann spent the first months of is life. After lunch, we hopped on the bikes and rode downdown - alll the way from MH's home in the East of the city to the center and all on nice bike paths.It is amazing how well the city has developed the infrastructure for cyclists. Downtown, we attached the bikes and walked to the Festival Place, where we watched some dances performed by the Peoples of the First Nations during the Festival Présence Atochtone.

     Die Stadt hat sich sehr verändert und ganz und gar zu ihrem Vorteil. Die meisten Wohnviertel sind  renoviert und in der Innenstadt sind viele neue Projekte entstanden, wie zum Beispiel der Platz auf dem die zahlreichen Festivals stattfinden, die in Montreal den ganzen Sommer durch organisiert werden. / La ville a changé beaucoup - pour le bien: la plupart des quartiers résidentiels ont été renovés et le centre-ville a vu plein de nouveau projets, comme par exemple la place ou se passe les nombreux festvals que la ville organise en été. / The City has changes a great deal, and for the better. Many neighborhoods have been renovated and embellished and downtown losts of new projects have seen the light of day, like the square where take place most of the festivals that run throughout the summer.

     Danach radelten wir quer durch die Stadt zum Park Lafontaine, holten uns zwei schöne Biere (oh mein Gott, die Auswahl ist galaktisch) und setzten uns im Park auf die Wiese, um den Klängen des Metropolitan Orchesters zu lauschen, das im Theatre de la Verdure spielte. / Ensuite, on a continué notre route à travers la ville vers le parc Lafontaine. On s'est cherché deux bonnes bières (oh mon Dieu, le choix en bieres artisanales et gigantesque!!!) et puis on s'est assis sur l'herbe pour écouter la musique de l'orchestre metropolitain qui a donné un concert au Theatre de la Verdure. / Then we rode through the city to the Lafontaine Park. We bought some beers (oh my god the selection of micro-brews is just gigantic!) and settled down on the lawn to listen to the Metropolitan Orchestra that performed at the Theatre de la Verdure

Smetana: Die Moldau / La Moldau / The Moldau 

     Ich habe eine ganz persönliche Beziehung zu diesem Park und er steckt voller Erinnerungen. Im Jahre 1995 wohnte ich nur einige Hundert Meter von diesem Park entfernt und verbrachte viele Abende in diesem Freilicht-Theater, um Musik, Tanz oder Theaterstücke anzuschauen, die dort den ganzen Sommer über gratis präsentiert werden. Hier entdeckte ich damals die begnadete Tänzerin Margie Gillis. / J'ai une relation affection particulière pour ce parc parce qu'il est plein de souvenirs. En 1995, j'ai habité a quelques pas de là et j'ai passé plusieurs soirées dans ce theatre en plein air pour assister à des spectacle de musique, de theatre et de danse qui y sont préesntés gratuitement tout au long de l'été. C'est ici que j,ai d.couverte la magnifique Margie Gillis / I have a very special relationship with this parc as it is full of memories. In 1995 I lived only a few steps away from there and in the summer I used to spend many evenings at the amphitheater to enjoy the various concerts, plays or dance performances that take place for free throughout the summer. Here I discovered the graceful Margie Gillis

     Auch hier sah ich Verbesserungen: Ein altes, ehemals verrammeltes Gebäude im Park beherbergt nun ein Gourmet Restaurant und es gibt so viele Fahrradständer überall. Nach der Veransaltung fuhren wir nach Hause, auch hier wieder die komplette Strecke auf gesichterten Radwegen./Ici aussi des changements: une vieille bâtisse au centre du parc qui jadis était verouillée accueuille maintenant un resto gourmet et il y a de nombreuses support à vélos. Après le spectacle on est retournées à la maison - le trajet au complet sur des pistes cyclables sécurisées. / Some improvement too, like the old building in the center of the park that had been locked back then and now houses a gourmet restaurant. Lots of bike racks. After the concert, we rode home - all the way on secured bike paths again.

     Meine Fixierung auf die Intrastruktur für Radfahrer hat sicherlich damit zu tun, dass Ben und ich uns hier vor 16 Jahren auf einem Fahrrad kennen gelernt haben - und damals waren die Fahrradwege nicht so zahlreich und so sicher! / Si j'insiste sur les infrastructures pour vélos c'est parce que c'est en bicyclette que Benoit et moi, on s'est rencontré ici il y a16 ans, mais dans le temps, les pistes cyclables étaient moins nombreuses et moins sécuritaires! / If I insist so much on the infrastructure for cyclists it is certainly because, 16 years ago, Ben I met here on our bikes but back then, there were much less bike paths and they were not as well done and as secure as they are now.

     Heute fuhren MH und ich wieder zur Westinsel, durch mehr gigantische und verwirrende Baustellen. Wir schauten das Haus an das ich mieten wollte, aber die Besichtigung glich eher einem Horrortrip! Ich bin immer wieder überrascht, was manche Hausbesitzer ihren prospektiven Mietern zumuten! Wir nutzen die Gelegenheit, um die angrenzenden Wohnviertel zu erkunden und andere Miet- und Kaufgelegenheiten zu notieren. Ich kenne keine Stadt, in der  dauerhaft so viele Immobilien zur Verfügung stehen. Als wir genug hatten, fuhren wir nach Pointe-Claire, eine Gemeinde, von der eine kanadische Athletin Émilie Heymans kommt, die heute in den Olypischen Spielen ihren Wettkampf bestritten und ihre Medaille im Wasserspringen versiebt hat. Der St-Lorenz Strom wird hier ziemlich breit und gleicht eher einem See, weswegen er Lac St-Louis heißt. Es ist eine schöne Atmosphäre, vor allem mit den historischen Gebäuden, wie dieser alten Mühle: / Aujourd'hui, MH et moi nous sommes rendus à travers des chantiers mêlants sur l'Ouest de l'Ile . On est allé voir la maison à louer, mais la visite ressemblaient plutpot à un trip d'horreur. C'est quand même incroyable ce que certains proprios proposent à leurs locataires éventuels! On a saisi l'occasion pour explorer le quartier à la recherche d'autres objets louables ou achetables. Je ne connais pas d'autres villes ou il y a une telle abondance d'immobilier. Quand on en avait assez, on s'est rendu à Pointe-Claire, la ville d'ou vient l'athlete canadienne Émilie Heymans qui a raté sa médaille aujourd'hui aux Olympiques au plongeon. Ici, le fleuve St-Laurent s'élargit de sorte à ressembler à un lac; voici pourquoi, sur cette section, il est nommé le Lac St-Louis. C'est une belle atmosphère surtut avec les beaux bâtiments historiques comme ce vieux moulin. / Today, we went back to the West Island, crossing some huge construction sites again in order to visit the rental house. It was rather a horror trip. It`s quite something what some homeowners dare to offer to their prospective tenants. But we took advantage of the opportunity to explore the neighborhood for some other prospective rentals or houses.There is no other city I know where you can find such an abundance of realty. When we had enough of it, we made it to Pointe-Claire, a community where the athlete Émilie Heymans comes from who lost any chance for  medal today at the springboard competition in London. Here the St-Lawrence River widen such as to resemble a lake which is why this section is called the Lac st-Louis. t is very charming especially witht he historic buildings such as this old mill:
